This is Quite a Powerful Imaging System and it is So Easy to Use; We Affectionately Called in our Washing Machine

Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of preclinical imaging systems, and modalities. But none quite as simple to install or operate as the iNSiGHT system, manufactured by Osteosys and distributed in North America by Scintica.

To look at it, the iNSiGHT system has a striking resemblance to a front load washing machine, but the similarities end there. I find that operating my washing machine seems to be more challenging then operating the iNSiGHT system - but the results are much more powerful.

The iNSiGHT is a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry system which provides measures of body composition and bone quality from a 25 second scan. DEXA/DXA is the gold standard in clinical practices for assessing bone health in patients with, or suspected of having, osteoporosis; it is also used widely in kinesiology and nutrition to look at body composition. In the preclinical setting DXA is used on so many different disease models to again not only look at bone health, but also very much to look at body composition and changes over time.

In this publicly available video I demonstrate how simple it is to operate the system and get the measurements out; while Dr. Val Fajardo, a Canadian Research Chair located at Brock University, enthusiastically describes how this system helped him find new insights into biological mechanisms and to more readily assess some of the changes previously noted in his studies.
